American rapper and songwriter, Stokeley Clevon Goulbourne, known professionally as Ski Mask The Slump God returns with a tape to kill for, “Sin City,” dropping this coming Friday, June 25th. Ski Mask The Slump God may have slowed his pace since the release of Stokeley in November of 2018, but the Floridian rapper hasn’t been entirely inactive. It would appear that he’s officially ready to lift the curtain on his next endeavor, Sin City, on which he has presumably been working.
It’s comeback season for Ski Mask The Slump God. Three drawn-out years have elapsed since the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native, born Stokeley Goulbourne, has served up a full pack of songs to his mosh-ready fans. Before the hiatus, his gold-selling, debut album, Stokeley, reigned as one of the best projects of 2018, climbing into the No. 6 slot on the Billboard 200 chart that year. The effort’s standout songs, “Faucet Failure,” “Nuketown” with Juice Wrld and “Foot Fungus,” all charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and have since earned Ski platinum plaques, including two-times platinum for the former, to accessorize the walls of his Atlanta crib. After taking some well-needed time to detox from the world, the 25-year-old rap juggernaut of Jamaican descent is now ready to turn himself and his music up again.
Sin City is Florida rapper Ski Mask the Slump God’s fourth mixtape, set to release on June 25, 2021. This is the first of three projects Ski hopes to release in 2021. According to an interview with XXL released on June 23, 2021, the project is inspired by Frank Miller’s comic book series, Sin City, and its 2005 film adaptaion, which is one of Ski’s favorite movies. The project’s promotional material was filmed in black and white with hints of red, just like the 2005 Sin City film. Ski Mask’s father also rapped under the name Sin City, which is likely why he released the mixtape’s trailer on Father’s Day 2021.
In the clip, a bloodied-up Ski Mask visits a contact seeking artillery, donning a fresh grill, and calling up DJ Scheme to put in a bit of work. As the trailer concludes, a simmering instrumental kicks in, over which it’s all too easy to picture Ski going to town with his signature animated flow. It should be interesting to see how Sin City plays out, as it has certainly been a minute since we’ve heard a full-length project from The Slump God. In any case, expect plenty of references to film — including Sin City, presumably — as well as animé and video games.
